I’m back to let you know how I’m getting ready for this ride. Well I already had a bike computer because I wanted to keep better track of how far as well as how fast/slow I ride. I bought a rear adjustable pannier rack from Axiom but found a problem. My rear wheel is only 20″ and so that makes it rather difficult for me to put the rack on my trike. I even had one of the guys at work drill a hole so I could insert the screw and it would fit together as if it were on a taller bike, but it turned out that I didn’t really need the hole drilled in the rack.
Thanks to a little bit of moving things around, I managed to get the rack mounted and still used my lovely head rest from The Fine Recliner and that of course is where my trike proudly displays her name of ‘Serenity’, yes I used the Firefly patch. I mean who wouldn’t it is such a cool patch!
So then I bought a pannier bag to go on the rack and it has drop down bags and it can expand upwards in the main compartment which gives me room when I put my water bladders in it. Oh but the main water bladder is in a sling fastened behind the seat of the bike and I use a CamelPak insulated director tube, which allows me to position the drinking tube so it will remain in place even when I’m not drinking from the bladder.
I now have two 3L water bladders and a 50oz bladder that I put my sports drink in. One of the water bladders and the sports drink bladder go in the pannier bag which I can quickly switch out if I need more.
One other thing I discovered, despite the great suggestion of a century rider to put a little bag on the frame between my legs close to boom to hold my stuff, I found that didn’t work out so well. I rode over my phone which had been in there and dumped most of the contents out onto the roadway. Besides it was not exactly comfortable to ride that way because my large wide legs kept brushing up against it. So that came off in the middle of a ride.
However, I need a bag on the side to hold things that I need to get to such as suntan lotion. Ever since I’ve started my ride (yes I’ve already started but that is in another post) I found that I’ve been getting extremely sunburned more than before probably because I’m staying out on the road longer. But in order for it to work I would need to stop every 80 minutes to reapply and that means stopping my ride and getting off and putting the stuff on. I hate stopping. So I saw something that will work but as it turns out I’m going to go what I believe to be a better route by going back to The Fine Recliner site and getting the side mounted bar kit. This will allow me to put whatever size bag on the side of my trike so I can access it when needed and it also means I can keep things such as suntan lotion and phone close by just in case.
One thing was really important to me and that was to get a speaker (I bought Boom speaker by Swimmer) on my trike because I can’t carry a tun to save my life though I love to sing along. Speaker is mounted on the pannier bag and secured in place, allowing me to hear music and traffic as well as the other sounds of the road as I ride. All of you out there should be very happy that I’m too shy to do karaoke or else you would run out of any building screaming and holding your blood ears because I hurt your ears. But out on the road, I can sing as off-key as I want and the vehicles will pass me by fast enough not to really hear how bad I’m singing.
Last but not least are the lights. I now have 2 front lights, seeing that I left the good light behind on my last ride and had to buy a new front/rear light. I don’t mind the back light because I figure that along with the other 2 rear lights all flashing in different patters should get people’s attention. Well that along with my 30″ silver holographic streamers and my state flag flying on a 6 ft pole attached to my trike.
So speaker, luggage for rack, drinks, snacks, suntan lotion, safety lights, safety flags and camera. I think I’m ready to continue riding through Texas.
